It’s Golf, Not Tennis

Welcome to Through The Green – Highland Rim owner’s blog.  As one of our owners and on behalf of the Doerr family, I want to tell our players about upcoming events, changes in the course or our operations, or just about day to day issues that come up at Highland Rim.  I will try to post something new every two weeks.  I hope you take the opportunity to read the blog and even post a comment.

Welcome to my blog….

17th Hole at Through The Green Highland RimOne of our staff asked me recently “why had we moved some of the brown and gold tee markers from their usual position?”  I replied, “Because its golf, not tennis.”  Golf, by its very nature, is a game where the player must adapt to changing conditions.  Each golf course, unlike a tennis court, is unique.  Its uniqueness is one of the elements that makes golf so challenging and rewarding.  A golfer must unlock the secrets of each course to make their best score possible given their ability.  Each golf course changes daily, hourly, and by the minute due to tee and pin positions, wind, rain, and temperature.  Just look at this year’s British Open and what those players had to overcome.

The reason we recently changed some of the tee positions was to give our players a different look at some of our holes. The picture attached is of number 17, a par five.  This hole is a fairly easy hole from the typical brown and gold tees. But with the tees placed back (as in the picture), it becomes much more demanding and challenges our players to hit their best shot. The same is true for number 14. With the brown tees back, the player approaches the hole from a different angle and must make his club selection carefully to avoid driving through the dogleg.

So I ask our players to embrace the changes and still shoot your best score.  Know that Pat Pewitt, Highland Rim’s Superintendent, and I will continue to tweak the course to bring you new challenges and keep the game fun.  I welcome your comments  either through the blog, by email (john@ttggolf.com), or in person.

See you at Highland Rim.
