Dear Friends and Fellow Golfers, The golf season traditionally begins with the Masters. I had a chance to attend the days of the practice rounds. It was interesting watching how the players practiced. While the rounds may not have been as intense, in many ways the players were working harder than in the tournament. You can read more in the article below. Highland Rim has a new customer relations manager. Lord Byron (named after Byron Nelson not the poet) joined us in December as a gift from the owner of Pleasant View Auto Service. |
He's a 6 month old black lab and you can meet him in the clubhouse, on the range, or swimming in the creek. He also thinks all golf balls are there for his enjoyment so beware! ![]() |
If you haven't been out yet this spring you're missing out on some great golf. The course and all the improvements we made last year have matured and are ready for play. We are in the process of converting 16 acres back to native grasses and wild flowers so as the season progesses you will truly see the course come alive. As always my family appreciates your patronage. We know there are lots of courses you could play but we hope you feel at home with us. If you have any comments, questions or concerns feel free to email me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . See you on the course! John |

Masters Recap Everyone knows about Charls Schwartzel's amazing run of 4 birdies to win his first Green Jacket. But few know how he practiced in the days before to get ready to prepare himself for the win. On Tuesday morning with temperatures in the forties, many of the established players, including Phil Mickelson, stuck to the range for the day, Schwartzel teed off with fellow South African Trevor Immelmann. ![]() While players get to choose their playing partners and start times for the practice rounds, it is anything but a casual round of golf. After hours of practice on Augusta's beautful range players tee of on #1 or #10. Depending on the hole type, players, particularly Masters' rookies, will hit driver or fairway metal, possible both off the tee. |
![]() On the fives they will also practice full shots or layups from the fairway. But it is around the greens that it becomes intense. One of the groups caddies will drop plastic disks on the green for the tournaments's four traditional pin placements. ![]() Each player will putt 2 or 3 balls from their intended target areas on the green to each pin. Finally they will chip or hit sand shots from where they are likely to miss. |
All this is accomplished in less time than it takes your regular foursome to play a hole. Then its back to the range for more practice. So the next time your late in the day and the course not crowded, consider playing a practice round like the pros. Your friends may then be amazed when you take all the money in your next game. ![]() |
| Meet James McClellan Effective January 1st, James McClellan has taken over as Highland Rim's course superintendent. Before joining us two years ago as an assistant, James was the Superintendent at Twelve Stones Crossing in Goodlettsville. James came to the Nashville area from his home of Houston, Texas, where he grew up helping his father maintain a nine hole course. If you already played the course this year you will have seen some of the subtle changes in course setup and maintenance practices James has implemented. James is also spearheading Highland Rim's effort to restore 16 acres of non-playing areas with native Tennessee warm season grasses and wildflowers. So next time you are out on the course say hi to James. You can't miss him, he'll be the biggest guy out there and always with a smile on his face. |
