April 2010 Newsletter

Dear Fellow Golfers,

John_holding_WGC_trophyThe Masters kicks off next week and with it, for many, it's the official start of the golf season. Late March and the first few days of April have been beautiful, let's hope it is a harbinger of weather to come. The course was aerified in early March and the greens have healed nicely.  This year's aerification was a little more difficult than usual because of last year's heavy rains. Excessive moisture caused the roots to shorten and as a result some areas of turf pulled up as the aerifier passed over.  But Pat and his crew have done a great job and the greens are now up to par! (Pun intended).

As we related in the March newsletter we have shortened our name to Highland Rim Golf Course and are introducing a new course logo. This month we'll continue the process by installing granite tee markers with the new logo. You can keep up with "What's New at Highland Rim?" by checking out our new feature on the Home Page, just click on the small picture close to the center of the page to find out the latest.

We will also be installing
new GPS units. We apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced with our current GPS System. Our provider went bankrupt so we have not been able to get units properly repaired. The good news is we have successfully negotiated a contract with a new company and are exchanging our current system for 72 of the latest generation units that will arrive soon. The really good news is that since we have been able to keep our costs the same there will be no additional cost to you, our valued customers. This means we can maintain our current prices and continue to be Nashville's best value in golf!

Our new logo will be appearing soon on our current website.  If you want a sneak peak at the new logo just visit one of the 100 restaurants around Nashville with our new Graffiti ads. If you spot one, email me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it and let me know what you think of it and where you saw it. Your next lunch at the course will be on me!

OUR LOWEST PRICES EVER! All our merchandise with the current Through the Green-Highland Rim logo is now on CLOSEOUT at 40% off. Nike Dri-Fit Shirts with our current logo are ONLY $23.99, logo hats are ONLY $7.20 and logo golf towels are ONLY $6.00! This is your last chance to grab a little piece of Highland Rim history, so get it while it lasts. In addition, new proshop merchandise is arriving daily. So stop by soon to check it all out.

Our staff and I look forward to seeing you soon. As always your input and comments are welcome, just email me at

March Mania Continues!

Highland Rim's annual NCAA Men's Basketball Bracket contest started March 18th with over 100 entries. The winner will receive a month of free golf, second place a week of free golf, and places 3 through 5 will win a free round. All other contestants will win a free lunch combo on their next visit. With just the Final Four left, Jerry Lane is leading the pack with 42 correct picks and a total score of 254. Total score is determined by adding the seed # of each correct pick to the total number of each pick. Good luck to Jerry and our other contestants going into this weekend's games! Watch for results posted on the website.

Highland Rim Golfer's Corner

In early March I was playing in the Thursday scramble with my brother Tom, Leon Candella, and Les Moore. After hitting a poor tee shot on #3, I started walking towards the green (to hide my frustration). As I turned around, I saw Leon tee off and watched his ball land near the flag which was still in the bowl toward the front of the green. I thought "Man, that could go in!".  I then watched my brother Tom's ball land in almost the same place followed by Les Moore again hitting it close but at this point I still could not see the balls on the green.

As I walked on the green I saw one ball 6 feet from the hole, one 9 inches from the hole, but not the third ball. So I looked in the hole and sure enough there was a Srixon 3 ball. I knew Leon was playing a Srixon 3 ball because I was riding with him, so I yelled "Leon, you got a hole-in-one!" Leon started yelling and dancing with Les and Tom patting him on the back.

Then I looked down at the ball that was 9 inches from the hole and it too was a Srixon 3. After inspecting the marks on the ball I realized it was Leon's ball and the ball in the hole was actually Tom's! With much trepidation I yelled, "Leon, sorry, never mind! Hey Tom, you got a hole-in-one!" When they reached the green they confirmed the location of each of their golf balls. Leon was a great sport and congratulated a much chagrined Tom.

Playing with golfers like Leon is what makes this sport so great. We all appreciate a great shot and good sportsmanship. I told Leon he had truly hit a great golf shot to 9 inches. To my brother Tom I said, "We all know a hole-in-one is just luck!"

Do you have a Highland Rim story you would like to relate and share with our customers. Email me the story at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Any story we use will WIN A FREE ROUND OF GOLF!

Becoming a great putter takes a tremendous amount of time. You need to practice to develop feel and touch, but the long hours standing in a bent over position can wreak havoc on your back, hips and neck.
